Theater: The Comédie de Montpellier is a historic theater that hosts a variety of plays and performances.

Music: The Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole Orchestra performs classical music at the Corum.

Photography: The International Festival of Photography takes place every year in September.

The historic center is a fascinating place to explore, with buildings dating back to the 10th century. Your guided tour is a great way to learn about the city’s history and architecture.

While the historic center is a captivating journey through time, Montpellier also boasts modern and innovative architecture. Some districts are  striking examples of 20th-century urban planning. Their clean lines, wide avenues, and futuristic buildings offer a stark contrast to the medieval charm of the old town.

Traditional sports

In the Montpellier region, traditional games and sports are an integral part of local culture and heritage. One of the most unique and exciting activities is Joutes Languedociennes, or water jousting, a centuries-old tradition that dates back to medieval times. Held on the canals and rivers, particularly in Sète, just a short distance from Montpellier, this thrilling sport involves two competitors on boats, armed with long wooden lances, attempting to unseat each other into the water. The boats are often brightly decorated, and the spectacle attracts large crowds, especially during the summer festivals. Another beloved sport in the region is pétanque, a popular French game similar to bocce, played with steel balls. It is often enjoyed in parks, village squares, and even the streets of Montpellier, where locals compete in friendly matches, particularly in the warm, sunny weather.

With 300 days of sunshine a year and 15 kilometers of stunning beaches just a stone’s throw from the city, it’s also perfect place to soak up the sun!
