Joutes Languedociennes: the thrill of water jousting

In the Montpellier region, traditional games and sports are an integral part of local culture and heritage. One of the most unique and exciting activities is Joutes Languedociennes, or water jousting, a centuries-old tradition that dates back to medieval times. Held on the canals and rivers, particularly in Sète, just a short distance from Montpellier, this thrilling sport involves two competitors on boats, armed with long wooden lances, attempting to unseat each other into the water. The boats are often brightly decorated, and the spectacle attracts large crowds, especially during the summer festivals.

Pétanque in the south of France: play like a local

Another beloved sport in the region is pétanque, a popular French game similar to bocce, played with steel balls. It is often enjoyed in parks, village squares, and even the streets of Montpellier, where locals compete in friendly matches, particularly in the warm, sunny weather.
