French language proficiency levels – find your CEFR level

French language proficiency levels according to the CEFR framework

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is the international standard for describing language ability in Europe. It helps learners and teachers assess proficiency across six levels, from A1 (beginner) to C2 (mastery). Understanding your level ensures you join the right course for your skills and goals.

Why knowing your French language proficiency level matters

Before enrolling in a French language course, it’s essential to know your starting point. The French language proficiency levels (CEFR) help both students and teachers build a customized learning path based on your real needs and abilities. This system ensures that each student is placed in a course that challenges them at the right level, without feeling overwhelmed or bored.

At French In, we use the CEFR as the foundation of our teaching approach, whether you’re studying in one of our schools in France or online. From A1 beginner to C2 mastery, our programs are carefully structured to match your current level and help you progress step by step. Even if you are unsure of your exact level, our free placement test will accurately assess your skills and suggest the best course for you.

Whether you plan to pass exams like DELF, DALF, or TCF, study in a French university, or simply feel more confident in everyday conversations, understanding your CEFR level in French allows you to set clear, achievable goals.
