Insider secret
Lyon is a city steeped in history, and the Vieux Lyon district is a prime example. With its narrow, winding streets and Renaissance architecture, it’s easy to feel transported back in time. But there’s one secret that few tourists know about: the traboules. These hidden passageways 🚶‍♀️ wind their way through the buildings, connecting courtyards and streets. Some traboules are centuries old, and they offer a unique glimpse into Lyon’s past. If you’re lucky, you might even stumble upon a secret garden or two.
During your French language course, you’ll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in French culture in a unique way: through cooking workshops! 🧑‍🍳 You can learn to prepare traditional Lyonnaise dishes like quenelles, a delicate dumpling made with pike, or cervelle de canut, a creamy cheese spread. 😋 If you’re not feeling up to cooking, you can always taste these delicacies at a local restaurant. 🍽️ Either way, you’re sure to have a delicious and unforgettable experience.

Lyon has a long and rich history of silk and textile production. 🧵 The city’s silk industry began in the 15th century, and Lyon soon became one of the most important centers of silk production in Europe. 🌍 Today, Lyon is still home to many silk and textile manufacturers, and the city’s silk and textile traditions are celebrated at the annual Fête des Lumières. ✨ During the festival, the city’s buildings are illuminated with stunning light displays, and many of the displays feature silk and textile designs.

Lyon has a long history of film and cinema. 🎥 The Lumière brothers, who are considered to be the fathers of cinema, were born in Lyon. 👶

Today, Lyon is still a great place to watch movies. The Institut Lumière is home to a museum, a library, and a cinema. 📚 It is a great place to learn about the history of cinema and to watch classic and contemporary films. 🍿

Lyon also has a number of other cinemas. By the way, we often organize outings to the cinema to help our students practice their listening skills. 👂 After the movie, we discuss it in class the next day. 🗣️ This is a great way for students to improve their language skills and learn about French culture. 🇫🇷

The most famous film festival is the Festival Lumière, which is held every October. 📅 The Festival Lumière is a celebration of the history of cinema, and it features screenings of classic and contemporary films.

Traditional sports

Lyon is known for its unique cultural traditions, and one of them is the sport of boules lyonnaises. 🎱 This traditional game is similar to pétanque, but it has some key differences. In boules lyonnaises, players use larger, heavier balls and aim for a smaller target. The game is played on a raised court, which adds an extra challenge. 🧗 Our students have the opportunity to practice this sport and experience a piece of Lyon’s heritage.

And for those who love skiing, there are several ski resorts located just a short drive from Lyon. With a bit of planning, you can easily spend a day or weekend on the slopes. ⛷️
